When melanin (the natural protein that gives our skin, hair and eyes their color) increases in our skin, our complexion becomes darker, splotchy and spotty. This is called pigmentation or hyperpigmentation.

Lighter skin tones develop freckles and sun spots, while darker skin tones become shadowed and patchy. People with darker skin tones are much more likely to experience hyperpigmentation as a result of sun exposure.

What causes Pigmentation?
Sun Exposure Cause Image
Sun Exposure

Stepping out into the sun without proper protection causes an uneven increase in melanin production. Redness and dark spots develop and then lead to discoloration.

Hormones Cause Image
Hormones

Pregnancy and birth control pills cause changes in estrogen and progesterone levels that trigger pigmentation. Hormone therapy also leaves people prone to hyperpigmentation.

Aging Cause Image
Aging

With age, collagen and elastin in the body deplete, and so does the body’s ability to repair itself. Sun spots, liver spots and solar lentigines develop in those over 40. Treatments like dermabrasion or exfoliation cause hyperpigmentation as you get older.

Skin injuries Cause Image
Skin injuries

When rashes and wounds get inflamed, they trigger melanocytes (melanin producing cells) to release excessive pigment granules (melanosomes). These darken and discolor the wounded area and take a long time to fade.

Medications Cause Image
Medications

Some medications cause photosensitivity, making your skin burn more in the sunlight. These are antibiotics, tricyclic antidepressants, older antihistamines, griseofulvin, quinine, and acne medications like accutane and retin-A.

What are the different types of Pigmentation?
01
Melasma

Large patches of dark, discolored skin, commonly occurring among pregnant women. Melasma appears mostly on the face and the stomach and is likely to affect those with darker complexions, between 20-40 years of age.

02
Sun spots

Flat, brown spots that develop in adults over 40 years of age, they are also known as age spots, solar lentigines or liver spots. They are caused by excessive sun exposure and are visible on the hands, face and neck.

Ayurveda and Pigmentation

The ancient Indian science of Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest proven healing systems. Based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit, Ayurveda seeks to restore health by harmonizing the biological energies (doshas).

Pigmentation is caused by an imbalance and accumulation of the Vata and Pitta doshas in the body which govern the elements of ether, air, fire and water. It causes the skin to become discolored and develop brown or red patches.

Ozone Signature’s Kumkumadi Thailam pacifies the Vata and Pitta doshas, bringing the body back into balance or equilibrium.
